An Entropy Dissipation–entropy Estimate for a Thin Film Type Equation∗

چکیده

We prove a lower bound on the rate of relaxation to equilibrium in the H1 norm for a thin film equation. We find a two stage relaxation, with power law decay in an initial interval, followed by exponential decay, at an essentially optimal rate, for large times. The waiting time until the exponential decay sets in is explicitly estimated.

Gradient Flows for non-convex energies: Asymptotics and stability for two models from fluid mechanics

This thesis mainly deals with two models from fluid mechanics which can be formulated as Wasserstein gradient flows: the Burgers’ and the thin-film equation. We are proving results about the long-time behavior of solutions to those equations using the gradient flow structure. These kind of results are usually obtained as a consequence of the semi-convexity of the corresponding energies, which d...

An Alorithmic Construction of Entropies in Higher-order Nonlinear Pdes

A new approach to the construction of entropies and entropy productions for a large class of nonlinear evolutionary PDEs of even order in one space dimension is presented. The task of proving entropy dissipation is reformulated as a decision problem for polynomial systems. The method is successfully applied to the porous medium equation, the thin film equation, and the quantum drift-diffusion m...

Entropy generation analysis of non-newtonian fluid in rotational flow

The entropy generation analysis of non-Newtonian fluid in rotational flow between two concentric cylinders is examined when the outer cylinder is fixed and the inner cylinder is revolved with a constant angular speed. The viscosity of non-Newtonian fluid is considered at the same time interdependent on temperature and shear rate. The Nahme law and Carreau equation are used to modeling dependenc...

Functional inequalities, thick tails and asymptotics for the critical mass Patlak-Keller-Segel model

We investigate the long time behavior of the critical mass Patlak-Keller-Segel equation. This equation has a one parameter family of steady-state solutions ̺λ, λ > 0, with thick tails whose second moment is not bounded. We show that these steady state solutions are stable, and find basins of attraction for them using an entropy functional Hλ coming from the critical fast diffusion equation in R ...
